Job Title: Housing Worker

Wage Rate: $29.79/ hour

Comp:  2026 – VAWS01

Position: Permanent Part-Time position (.60FTE 21hrs/wk.)  

Location: VAWS -Shelter Site

Violence Against Women Services provides a safe, supportive environment for women and children living in abusive relationships. Yorktown Family Services – Violence Against Women Services operates a 30-bed shelter for abused women and children and provides related community programs, namely the Transitional Housing and Support Program and the Women and Communities Against Violence (WACAV) Program, which assists women fleeing abuse who remain in the community and the Here to Help program which is a support group program for children witnessing violence and their mothers.

Yorktown Family Services – Violence Against Women Services provides emergency shelter and crisis support for women and children fleeing abuse. We offer counselling, referrals, a 24-hour crisis line, court escort, advocacy and assistance with housing, welfare, immigration, medical and legal services, children’s programs, early intervention for child witnesses of woman abuse, transitional support for women living in the community as well as those leaving the shelter.

Job Summary

The Housing Worker assists the women residing in the Shelter to secure and maintain appropriate housing.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary shelter team to support client outcomes
  • Adhere to organizational policies, procedures, and service standards
  • Provide housing support, advocacy, referrals, and information to women and children experiencing abuse
  • Identify and secure appropriate housing options, including sourcing new opportunities for clients
  • Facilitate group education sessions on housing topics (e.g., tenant rights, shared living, housing search strategies)
  • Advocate for clients to prevent housing crisis and support housing stability
  • Conduct comprehensive housing searches, particularly for high-needs or “hard-to-house” clients
  • Represent client perspectives by participating in committees and community initiatives addressing systemic housing barriers
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records and documentation
  • Respond to emergencies in accordance with established protocols
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Completion of a post secondary Degree/Diploma in a related Human Services field
  • Demonstrates at least 1 year of experience supporting abused women and/or families experiencing homelessness
  • Apply knowledge of housing systems and services for low-income populations
  • Utilize crisis intervention skills in high-pressure or urgent situations
  • Conduct effective housing searches for clients with complex barriers
  • Understand the dynamics and impacts of violence against women and children
  • Collaborate effectively with diverse clients across cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Communicate clearly through strong oral and written skills
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and relationship-building abilities
  • Facilitate group sessions and apply knowledge of group dynamics
  • Exhibit cultural competence and cross-cultural awareness
  • Use Microsoft Office and related administrative tools proficiently
  • Meet requirements including a current Vulnerable Sector Check
