January 27, 2023Looking for New Board Members
Are you passionate about helping women, children, youth and families in West Toronto create positive change in their lives? Would you like to be part of a team that values respect, accountability, responsiveness, learning, collaboration, innovation, diversity, cultural competency and equity? If you have answered yes, then Yorktown Family Services (YFS) has an amazing opportunity for you. We’re currently looking to recruit three new board members to join our board this October 2022.
We want our board to look like the West Toronto communities we serve, so we are looking to increase representation from individuals who are racialized, financially disadvantaged, living with a disability, and/or younger community members (ages 18-35). Preference will be given to candidates that reside in West Toronto as this is the geographic area we serve.
While our priority is diversity, the board is also seeking to have important skills around the board table. Your application will be particularly appealing to us if you have a background in accounting and/or financial management, or understand the Ontario Health Services Sector, or are an individual with fundraising ability/experience, but these are not required.
Find out more about this opportunity below, and if you think you or someone you know might make a great Yorktown Family Services board member, please apply by sending your resume and a short cover letter explaining why you are interested in joining the board and how you think your involvement can help the organization to hr@yorktownfamilyservices.com by Friday July 22, 2022.
YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED:
Is this a paid board opportunity?
This is a volunteer board of directors with no financial payment involved. We offer you the opportunity to work with and get to know an interesting and diverse group of volunteers who also want to make our community and the lives of those in it better. Our board table is an environment where everyone’s perspective is valued and board members can feel comfortable being their whole selves and sharing ideas freely. Participation on the YFS board also offers you opportunities to learn and develop professionally. The work we do is important, and its impact on women, children, youth, and families is positive and life-changing.
Do board members have to donate funds?
There is no financial obligation, however board members are asked to donate to Yorktown Family Services annually, if they are able. Our goal is for 100% of Board members to participate in this giving, however it is not mandatory if it is a financial hardship.
Do I need to have previous board experience to join?
YFS welcomes a mix of individuals with previous board experience as well as people who have other strengths and lived experiences to contribute.
When and how often do meetings take place?
Meetings are two hours in length and take place once a month except July and August when no meetings are held. An extra meeting or two may be required throughout the year in relation to a special project or process. Additionally, committee meetings take place once per month.
Where are the in-person meetings?
YFS will most likely be offering hybrid options for attending board meetings (online or in person at our Eglinton & Dufferin office). Board members should be from Toronto or Greater Toronto Area and available to meet in person should the need arise.
How many hours’ commitment is it?
The time commitment is approximately 4 to 8 hours a month including preparation for meetings and attendance at board and committee meetings.
What do you discuss at board meetings?
The Board of Directors helps the Executive Director and YFS make decisions about the organization’s future and ensures that current activities reflect the organization’s mission, vision, values and strategic priorities. We examine the agency’s financials, help to solve problems that may be affecting the organization, review policies and provide our perspectives on planned activities.
Will my photo and information about me appear on the Yorktown Family Services website?
Board members’ photos appear on the YFS website and in the Annual Report however, if this poses an issue, we will find a mutually agreeable solution.
