RBC just featured Yorktown Family Services in their RBC Stories and we wanted to share it with you!

New Movement to Address Youth Mental Health Welcomed by Advocates

Integrated Youth Services is an opportunity to build a system that incorporates measurement-based care, ensuring accountability to young people and other stakeholders.

Suzette Arruda-Santos doesn’t talk about the global pandemic in the past tense.

Its effect continues to reverberate through the communities where she serves as Chief Executive Officer of the West Toronto Youth Wellness Hub (Yorktown Family Services), part of the Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario (YWHO) network.

Youth remain especially hard hit.

“They are almost a lost group within the community. Many who disengaged from school never went back. Their lack of positive social connections comes at a time when, developmentally, they need it most.”

The CEO says their challenges are already compounded by living in complex and high-need communities with high levels of precarious employment and homelessness along with parents who may also struggle with chronic and unaddressed mental health issues.

“All of these things impact how young people show up at the Hub. We see a tremendous amount of youth struggling with thoughts of suicide, depression, eating disorders, and anxiety.”
