Job Title: Daryeelka Qoyska – Somali Outreach and Education Program Children’s Group Childminder

Duration: 3 Hours/week FTE 0.09, Temporary Part-Time Pay Rate: $14.14/ hr

Yorktown Family Services takes pride in our tradition of providing high quality programs that are responsive to the specific needs of the communities we serve. Yorktown has an exciting opportunity for a motivated and knowledgeable Group Childminder for our program Daryeelka Qoyska. 

Primary Function: 

Assist in the implementation of recreational and stimulation programming for children birth to six years of age in the Daryeelka Qoyska parenting program for Somali families. The program offers a mothers’ group that is a modification of the evidence-based COPE Parenting Program and Incredible Years® Program designed to reflect the culture, religion and language of the Somali Community, while focusing on such themes as parenting in Canada, understanding child development, helping children succeed in school and issues concerning Somali youth.

Responsibilities: 

  • Work with program staff and volunteers to provide an integrated parenting
  • Provide a welcoming environment for children and
  • Follow agenda for each group session (i.e., activities, snacks).
  • Plan and implement age appropriate activities for the
  • Inform the Program Coordinator of child protection issues
  • Plan and set up program on a weekly basis and complete necessary documentation (i.e., logs, consent forms, attendance, ).
  • Ensure children are signed in and out by their
  • Ensure that positive and constructive feedback is given to caregivers after each
  • Clean and tidy play area
  • Follow all agency procedures, e., confidentiality.

Skills & Qualifications: 

  • C.E. / C.Y.W. or directly related undergraduate degree / diploma from an accredited university together with two years of related experience.
  • Experience working with children birth to six
  • Knowledge of child
  • Knowledge and experience working with Somali
  • Good organizational
  • Good communication
  • Flexibility to work
  • CPR, First Aid
  • Fluency in Somali will be considered an asset
  • Current Vulnerable Sector Screen (6 months or less).

Program Times: Daytime – to be decided

Reports to the Manager, Prevention and Quality Improvement
