MOMS ARE HEROS!

On May 5th, 2020, Yorktown Family Services is participating in #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of unity and giving, and we would like to do that by recognizing Moms, because to us, Moms are Heroes!

Moms like Cynthia:

a happy mother with her two daughters

Cynthia* had endured years of abuse at the hands of her husband. She had excused the emotional, verbal and physical abuse assuming that ‘he was just going through something’. However, after the birth of her daughters she came to realize that he was not going to change. “It finally became clear to me that this would be life as we know it if I stayed. I didn’t want this for me and certainly not for Jewel* and Beth*,” Cynthia reflects. She learned about Yorktown’s Violence Against Women (VAW) Programs through an acquaintance and contacted Evelyn, a Housing and Transitional Support Worker.

Together, Evelyn and Cynthia came up with a plan for Cynthia to become self-sufficient so she could leave her husband and start a new life with her daughters. With Evelyn’s on-going support, over the course of three years, Cynthia went back to school, changed careers, started a new job, and is now living with her daughters, free of violence and abuse.

Cynthia says, “I am sharing my story because I want people to know about the services that Yorktown offers women who are in need of help and don’t know where to turn. Evelyn made me feel like I could accomplish anything. I was determined, but even with that, and all the inner strength I could muster, it wouldn’t have been enough without Evelyn’s knowledge, connections to resources and tireless help.” says Cynthia.

Cynthia’s story is one of perseverance, resiliency and hope. She is a true role model and a Hero to her daughters!

How Yorktown is adapting to COVID-19:
Incidents of domestic violence are on the rise due to the stress and heightened anxiety caused by the COVID-19 outbreak and the requirement for self-isolation. Yorktown serves 5,000 clients a year and the trajectory of the need for our phone and video counselling services is on track to double. We need to increase our capacity to respond to the demand.

You can be a hero too!
Your gift to Yorktown provides the counselling and connection to resources to enable a Mom, like Cynthia, to access the support she needs to transition from a life of abuse and violence.

In honour of Mother’s Day, we invite you to share with us what makes your mom a hero.

Let us know with the hashtag #MomsAreHeroes and we will share your comments on our Social Media pages in celebration of Mother’s Day.
