Counselling Services
Yorktown Child and Family Centre offers a full continuum of mental health treatment services for children from birth to eighteen years of age and their families. Professionally qualified mental health staff work within a multi-disciplinary framework to ensure a comprehensive and holistic approach to the child, youth and family needs. The length of counselling depends on needs and what the child, youth or family want to accomplish as a result of counselling. All situations are unique and services are individualized to the specific situation.
-
How to obtain Counselling Services - Intake and Service Coordination:
Contact the intake worker to request counselling services. Your call will be returned within two days. The intake worker will discuss your concerns, needs and the services available. A more complete telephone interview, the BCFPI, will be done once you decide to pursue service with us. After you have completed the intake process, a worker will be assigned and will offer you a face-to-face meeting, usually within two weeks. The worker will discuss service options with you and a preliminary plan for appropriate services. There is usually a wait time for counselling/treatment services and while you wait, the worker will act as your service coordinator and will be your connection to the Centre.
-
Individual and Family Therapy:
Counselling services are offered to children, youth and families with a wide range of emotional and behavioural concerns. For the first few sessions, an assessment process occurs in partnership with children, youth and families. This process examines the strengths, weaknesses and needs, and results in the treatment goals for counselling. The length of time that a child/youth/family participates in counselling depends on the plan resulting from the assessment, and the goals are reviewed regularly. Throughout the treatment process, work is collaborative with the family and with any other service providers that may be involved.
-
Early Childhood Mental Health Services:
Providing mental health services to children (0 to 6 Years) and their families in accessible locations in the home, school and the community. Services include assessment, play therapy, group, family counselling, and/or focused interventions to strengthen parent-child interactions.
-
Brief Counselling:
Sometimes a few sessions of counselling will address less serious concerns. When this is appropriate, brief counselling is an option. It may be offered if you are not involved with another service provider and you are able to attend three or up to four sessions during daytime hours. Ask the intake worker for further information if you are interested in this option.
